The Harringworth Parochial Charities was established in 1883 by local farmers and landowners to create an income for the education of children in the local village school and to fund books and activities. Small parcels of land were given to the Trust and were rented out for an annual income. This income was then distributed to claimants.

Today, the Charities continue to help children and students in education, sports training and apprenticeship schemes by offering financial support towards books, technology and tuition in the form of an annual contribution towards these activities. The education element is for those under 25 years old. The Charities also offer an annual heating grant to persons in the village who wish to apply.

The Trust is managed by eight trustees and has an annual income of about £3,000. This income is available for distribution each year in order to meet the requirement of the Charities Commission. Therefore, the trustees would encourage residents of Harringworth to apply to apply by 30 September 2024 so that we can allocate grants this year.

We have given grants for a wide range of applications including:

  • apprenticeships for thatching;
  • purchase of tools for apprenticeships;
  • assistance towards technology purchases;
  • work experience in farming;
  • music lessons;
  • sports lessons and memberships;
  • educational books;
  • higher education and university book funds; and
  • annual heating grants.
